By Dr Pj Prakash

If you consider your health important, then nutrition is essential, and choosing foods that are nutritious means staying away from overly processed items lacking in nutrients. Many people opt for organic foods which have a high nutritional value, and are found in most grocery stores.

Be sure that you eat enough food. Sometimes, you will end up under-eating, which can negatively impact your body too. When you do not eat enough, your insulin and blood sugar levels could drop so low that you will be starving and crave sweets. It is ideal to have five or six small meals each day.

Select dairy items with care. While dairy contains vital nutrients like vitamin D, protein, calcium, and potassium, you should consume the fat-free or low-fat products. You can cut back on milk calories but not nutrition when you choose skim or low-fat versions. If you have a milk allergy or are lactose intolerant, try soy or lactose-free milk. Many cheeses are high in saturated fat, so opt for a reduced-fat version.

Always take a few minutes to prepare lunches and snacks for your children before they go to school. The food you put into their bodies will affect their performance in the classroom and outside of the classroom.

Try reducing the amount of meat you eat by exploring the world of vegetarian cooking once or twice a week. This helps decrease unhealthy animal fat consumptions. In addition, it will save you money, help save the planet, and it's delicious.

If you want to shorten your recovery time from illnesses, consume foods rich in zinc. The favorable effects of zinc on your immune system include more power to stave off illness and recover in a shorter period. You can get good doses of zinc in pumpkin seeds, peaches, wheat germ and strawberries. Most of these foods also provide antioxidants that fight free radicals.

Make sure fresh, pure, filtered water is available all day long. It is okay to serve your kids juices and milk with some meals, but not every one of them. You are more likely to deaden their appetite by offering them juice and milk all day, and they will be less motivated to eat when mealtime rolls around.

It might be hard to swallow, but red meat is actually not all that unhealthy! For example, a lean cut of red meat contains fewer grams of fat than an equal amount of bird meat with skin. The secret when choosing red meat is to opt for lean low-fat cuts, such as top round or eye of round.

Parents much supervise what their children are eating for lunch. This way your children will have a healthy lunch. By packing their lunch, you have control over its contents. You don't have much control when buying hot lunch at school.

You can make baking recipes more nutritionally beneficial by changing out half of the amount of white flour they require with whole wheat. Doing this improves your bread's nutritional value without having to give up texture. You can also replace half the shortening required with applesauce.

Although salads have a well-deserved reputation for being healthy, many people reduce or eliminate the health benefits by slathering their salad in rich dressings. Creamy dressings have a lot of fat and not many beneficial nutrients. Rather, opt for vinaigrette dressings or just combine olive oil and vinegar yourself. Putting some walnuts and cranberries in a salad is also a great idea.

As you have learned, nutrition is all about what you eat and drink. It is an important factor to staying healthy and living for a long time. Using the information in this article, you can practice proper nutrition and live a long and healthy life.
